Hoehn Family Galleries Reveals Spring 2017 Exhibition
San Diego, Calif. (PRWEB) December 14, 2016 -- The Hoehn Family Galleries, located on the historic University of San Diego (USD) campus, has announced its spring 2017 exhibition, British Modern from the British Museum: From the Great War to the Grosvenor School, on display February 10 – May 19, 2017. The exhibition will feature 60 works chronicling the graphic work of two of the most significant movements of early 20th century modern art in Britain: Vorticism and the Grosvenor School. This is the first time a significant exhibition of this material has been seen in the western United States.
Selected from the world-renowned print collection of the British Museum, this striking exhibition will feature hand selected works by exemplars of British modernism including Edward Wadsworth, Charles Nevinson, Wyndham Lewis, Henry Gaudier-Breszka, Claude Flight, Cyril Power, and Sybil Andrews. British Modern from the British Museum: From the Great War to the Grosvenor School will familiarize American audiences with these significant bodies of work and their importance for avant-garde art practice in both the UK and their influence abroad. From the Great War to the Grosvenor School will offer audiences the opportunity to view some of the best examples of this remarkable work drawn from the collection of one of the world’s most important museums.
The exhibition will also highlight the formal and aesthetic innovations of each and will contextualize them in relation to their historical moments and the intellectual movements of their time. The recent 100-year anniversary of the beginning of the First World War, as well as recent reassessments of Vorticism (Tate Britain, 2011) and the Grosvenor School (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston 2008) make this an opportune time to consider these two path-breaking movements in relation to one another.
From the Great War to the Grosvenor School Opening Reception will be Thursday, February 9. The opening celebration will begin at 5:15 p.m. with a lecture titled “Wrestling with Modernity in the Department of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum” by Hugo Chapman, Keeper of Prints and Drawings at the British Museum, followed by a reception in the galleries from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. The reception will include refreshments and light appetizers throughout the evening and is free and open to the public.
Regular gallery hours are Monday through Friday noon to 5 p.m. All exhibitions and related programs are free. The Hoehn Family Galleries is located at Founders Hall 102 at University of San Diego, 5998 Alcaia Park, San Diego, Calif., 92110. About the Hoehn Family Galleries
The fine art exhibition program at USD traces its origins back to the 1980s, when Professor Therese Truitt Whitcomb began organizing installations with the help of her students in a converted classroom space near the front entrance to Founders Hall. Over the course of the next 25 years, more than 100 exhibitions were mounted in Founders Gallery until it was expanded, professionalized and re-named the Hoehn Family Galleries in 2002, thanks to a generous gift from Robert and Karen Hoehn, long-time supporters of the Arts at USD. The Hoehn Family Galleries now function as a primary place for exhibiting fine art prints regularly during the academic year. Exhibitions held have included shows of loaned work from global institutions, as well as works from University Galleries' own impressive and extensive print collection.
