Tom Sansonetti joined Holland & Hart in 1993 and built a nationally recognized practice in natural resources and environmental law. Long considered an expert in natural resources and environmental matters, Sansonetti served as Solicitor, the third-ranking position in the Department of the Interior and as one of the top leaders in the Department of Justice.
As the Assistant Attorney General for the Environment and Natural Resources Division (ENRD) of the Department of Justice from December 2001 to April 2005, Sansonetti was responsible for overseeing the litigation strategy in federal district and appellate courts on behalf of eight cabinet secretaries including those in charge of Interior, EPA, Energy, and Agriculture.
He is a recognized expert in Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act issues; water rights; the Endangered Species Act; surface mining development and reclamation; Indian law; development of renewable energy projects, including geothermal, solar, and wind projects; oil and natural gas permitting; public lands management; and many other areas of energy and natural resources law.
Paul Seby counsels public and private clients how to navigate, comply, and successfully operate within the complex framework of state and federal environmental regulation. He advises clients in the energy, mining,
manufacturing, and service industries how to comply with virtually all environmental and natural resources regulation, and he guides clients through the approval process for permits and rights of way.
Seby draws on his comprehensive understanding of how government programs and agencies function to strategically counsel clients in federal and state rulemaking and policy development.
When agencies act outside or beyond their authority, Seby has extensive experience prosecuting cases against agencies to enforce and overturn administrative regulations, and he defends clients in federal and state enforcement proceedings, through appearances before the Supreme Court of the United States, several U.S. Courts of Appeal, the Colorado Supreme Court, and many other lower courts.
