Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region, a Leader in In-Home Care, Responds to Study Showing Number of Centenarians in Ontario on the Rise
Toronto, Canada (PRWEB) January 29, 2014 -- Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region (http://www.HomeCareAssistance-Toronto.com), the leading provider of non-medical, in-home senior care in the Greater Toronto Area, is responding to a recent survey showing the number of centenarians in Ontario is on the rise, with women more often outliving men.
A new study published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society found that the number of centenarians in Ontario has increased by more than 70% over the last 15 years. In 1995, there were 1,069 centenarians in Ontario; by 2010, that number had increased 72.3% to 1,842. Women made up 85.3% of all centenarians and 89.4% of those aged 105 and older. (Source: Rochon, P.A., et al., “Demographic Characteristics and Healthcare Use of Centenarians: A Population-Based Cohort Study,” Journal of the American Geriatrics Society web site, January 2, 2014; http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jgs.12613/abstract.)
The study also found that almost half of Ontario centenarians lived in the community, with 20% living independently and 25.3% living with the support of publicly funded home care.
“Rather than moving into a long–term care facility, a growing number of Ontarians prefer to live at home for as long as possible. In fact, nine out of 10 seniors say they would rather age gracefully at home,” says Lester Fix, executive vice president of Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region. “Unfortunately, frailty, chronic illness, or forgetfulness can make living alone too difficult. And over the coming years, as more and more baby boomers retire, the number of centenarians in Ontario wanting to live at home is only going to increase.”
Fix explains that in an era where government-paid care for the elderly is becoming increasingly limited, this study highlights the need for Ontarians to start examining their long-term options. This includes considering a home care company with a diversified strategy designed to meet the growing needs of seniors who are living longer.
Families also need to start thinking about how to keep seniors happy, healthy, and safe in their own homes. Fix advises that the experts at Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region understand that live-in care allows loved ones to remain in the comfort of their home and maintain as much independence as possible while ensuring the highest level of safety.
“With full-time, around-the-clock care, a caregiver is always watching over your loved one, offering emotional support, reducing fall risk, and assisting in all activities of daily living, including companionship, cooking and light housekeeping, medication reminders, bathing, dressing and grooming assistance, grocery shopping and errands, transportation, and a range of exercise,” Fix says.
In addition to live-in care, Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region also provides hourly home care, meaning clients can maintain their normal daily routines and can choose the most suitable times for caregiver service.
“Whether it’s full-time, around-the-clock care or hourly care, a Home Care Assistance - Toronto/York Region caregiver is watching over a loved one,” Fix concludes. “Surrounded by their possessions, pets, and a familiar environment, our clients receive the support they need while still being able to enjoy their regular activities.”
