Homely Hounds Sought for World's Ugliest Dog® Contest
Petaluma, CA (PRWEB) June 13, 2014 -- Homely hounds are the top dogs in the 26th annual World's Ugliest Dog® Contest at the Sonoma-Marin Fair, Friday June 20. Folks from across the country are signing up their pooches to take part in the annual hometown event in Petaluma, California, that has gained international notoriety. Contestants will be arriving from as far away as Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona and New Mexico.
Beauty is in the eye o the beholder, and the Contest has been a testament that all dogs do not have to meet AKC pedigree standards to be man's (or woman's) best friend. The owners of all kinds of dogs are also all kinds of people – from youngsters to senior citizens, each proud of their pet despite missing fur, crossed eyes, duck waddles or mismatched ears. They proudly walk both pedigreed pooches and Heinz 57 mutts down the red carpet to the cheers and clapping of the crowd.
2013 winner Walle (pronounced Wally), owned by Tammie Barbee of Chico, CA, was the crowd favorite with his huge head, hump back and duck waddle. Judge Brian Sobel claimed Walle, a mutt mix of beagle, basset and boxer, looked as though he had been Photoshopped from a variety of dogs.
A Beauty and the Beast Walk features Miss Sonoma County royalty walking the stage with a furry friend available for adoption from the Sonoma Humane Society’s Pet Waggin’. A large number of the contestants have been rescued from animal shelters across the country.
The winner of the competition receives $1500 in prize money with awards for placing in the Pedigree and Mutt classes, including prizes from the presenting sponsor Paradise Pet Resort. Anyone can enter their dog in the contest and there is no entry fee when applications are received in advance. Entries on the day of the event have a fee of $20. Dogs must have veterinary papers, current shots, and must be "naturally ugly". All dogs are also examined by the Contest veterinarian prior to their participation.
