Honkamp Krueger to Speak on Construction Auditing at the 2013 ACUA Annual Conference
St. Louis (PRWEB) July 26, 2013 -- Matt R. Gardner, practice leader for construction audit services, and Shannon D. Wiese, risk advisory services manager at Honkamp Krueger & Co., P.C. (HK), have been selected to speak on the topic of construction auditing and capital project cost recovery at this year’s Association of College and University Auditors (ACUA) Annual Conference September 22-26 in Norfolk, Virginia.
Gardner and Wiese’s presentation, “Construction Auditing Risks and Capital Project Cost Recovery Strategies for 2013 and Beyond” will help attendees enhance their knowledge of construction related risks that are prevalent during large capital projects in the college and university sector. They will show how being proactive and putting controls in place prior to large projects can protect an organization from financial statement fraud, corruption and bribery, and misappropriation of assets.
Those attending the presentation will also get an overview of the types of construction contracts, the bidding and award process, controlling construction costs, as well as the payment and closeout process.
Preventing construction related aggregate risk is an under-hyped best practice for colleges and universities interested in mitigating legal, safety, environmental, regulatory and/or reputational risk problems. Issues surface when schools fail to engage licensed Certified Construction Auditors (CCA) and Construction Control Professionals (CCP) to independently review and opine if construction projects at their respective schools are free of material issues and risks.
“Colleges and universities should be taking advantage of proactive and cost conscious options such as contingency construction audits from licensed and independent CCAs, CCPs and/or CFEs for all construction project contracts in excess of $5 million," says Gardner, "Inherently, these reviews which require no additional cash outlays will minimize and mitigate the likelihood and impact of legal, safety, environmental regulatory, financial and reputational risks which are prevalent in construction projects within the higher education sector.”
The ACUA is an international professional organization serving institutions of higher education across the globe. The annual conference is the premier event for ACUA members to the latest issues related to internal auditing in higher education.
