Honolulu Rail Transit Project makes Roads & Bridges’ 2016 Top 10 Bridges List
HONOLULU (PRWEB) November 30, 2016 -- The Honolulu Rail Transit Project ranked No. 4 on Roads & Bridges 2016 Top 10 Bridges list. HNTB Corporation led design for the first 10 miles of an elevated guideway and a maintenance and train storage facility on the project, which includes a new 20-mile transit line connecting West O’ahu with downtown Honolulu and the Ala Moana Center.
A Roads & Bridges article explained that urban density made work challenging, and more than seven miles of the guideway were built on shoulders or medians over existing roadway rights-of-way.
“This is a technically complex project being delivered in a design-build environment,” said Kuan Go, PE, SE, HNTB project manager. “Kiewit and the HNTB team safely and efficiently completed this challenging project on time for owner Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation. The Roads & Bridges recognition further validates the team’s cohesion and dedication.”
The design-build project includes installing cast-in-place and precast guideway sections, rail elements, intelligent transportation systems and pavement restoration. Sustainability is important to HNTB’s design, with the maintenance and train storage facility approved for LEED ® Silver certification.
“As a significant new transportation option for residents of O’ahu, environmental impact mitigation on the project is crucial,” said Tim Cobb, PE, HNTB project director. “This well-deserved recognition testifies to the project team, which has closely collaborated to ensure sustainability, safety and efficient delivery.”
Editor’s note: Roads & Bridges' Top 10 Bridge awards, created in 2000, recognize the top projects in North America. Each year, nominations are submitted to the R&B editorial staff, which determines the Top 10 list based on project challenges, impact to region and scope of work.
