Hood College Department of History Hosts Fred Talks
(PRWEB) October 14, 2017 -- The Department of History at Hood College will present a series of Fred Talks at 5 p.m. in Hodson Auditorium in Rosenstock Hall on Oct. 16, 17 and 19.
Faculty in Hood’s history department will present a series of lectures that act as previews for upcoming courses. The series offers audiences exciting introductions to a variety of historical topics from the medieval to the modern era. These 15-minute talks are modeled on the Ted Talk series. “Fred,” perhaps obviously, comes from “Frederick.”
Terry Scott, Ph.D., assistant professor of history, will give a talk on Oct. 16 titled “From Convict Leasing to Mass Incarceration,” exploring how post-Civil War changes in the fear and perception of African Americans gave rise to early forms of mass incarceration.
Corey Campion, Ph.D., assistant professor of history and global studies, will present “Where Did All the Bees Go?” on Oct. 17. He will discuss how honeybees were once a cherished symbol in many religions and cultures but are now disappearing with devastating consequences for humans and the globe.
Jay Harrison, Ph.D., assistant professor of history, will present “What is Latin America?” on Oct. 19. His talk will examine the vast, diverse part of the western hemisphere known as Latin America and will explore how we define the peoples and nations that make up this region.
These talks are free and open to the public. For more information, contact Corey Campion at campion(at)hood.edu.
