Hope Builders Ministries Participates in Dignity Project
Leesville, LA (PRWEB) October 30, 2013 -- For more than 20 years, Hope Builders Ministries has participated in serving vulnerable people in Africa. The Dignity Project, which seeks to provide children in rural African countries with tools for self-sustained farming, and teaches them how to farm properly, is a particular example. Hope Builders Ministries is excited to provide an update on their work.
The Dignity Project has been launched in Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia. Zimbabwe is the nation next slated to be on the list. Instead of having to scrounge or beg for food, the orphans, or street children, are matched with widows, or care takers, by the local church to form a “family” environment. One example is that of Mama Rolinga.
“I was scratching in trash cans to try and find food after my husband died,” she said. “As a widow with no one to help me I had to beg for everything. The pastor of our church asked me to look after four street children after he told me that the church was going to give some widows a chance to work in a garden to grow food for them and the children. Now after eight months of growing food and bartering for some things we need the children are doing well and I have my dignity as good member of society back.”
Training in vegetable gardening is provided to the families as well as basic tools and seeds for planting. Children are sent to school and help provide food by having chores in the gardens. As the family grows in their successful production of food, some animal husbandry is taught and two goats and five chickens are provided to enhance their food production.
