Hospice Volunteer Program Offers Opportunity to Touch Lives
Basking Ridge, NJ (PRWEB) January 22, 2015 -- The Visiting Nurse Association of Somerset Hills is offering an opportunity for men and women to train as hospice volunteers. Volunteers provide much needed joy, support and assistance to patients and their families dealing with life-limiting illness. Responsibilities for patient care volunteers may include companionship, errands, respite for caregivers, transportation and helping at the VNA office. People trained in pet therapy, who have Reiki certification, and those with a music background and are interested in providing music therapy to hospice patients are also invited to attend the program. No previous hospice or healthcare experience is necessary.
Beginning February 19, 2015, the free training program will run for five consecutive Thursdays from 12:30-3:30 p.m. at the VNA headquarters at 200 Mt. Airy Road in Basking Ridge. Volunteers will gain an overall understanding of the hospice philosophy and the volunteer’s role. “Volunteers are important members of the hospice care team at the VNA,” said Angela Whitt, Coordinator of Volunteers at the VNA of Somerset Hills. “In addition to providing respite and comfort to others, our volunteers tell us that their own lives are enriched through this personally gratifying and emotionally rewarding experience.”
Pre-registration is required. For more information about becoming a volunteer or to register, contact Angela Whitt, Coordinator of Volunteers, at 908-766-0180 ext. 115 or email awhitt(at)visitingnurse(dot)org.
