Hospitality Workers Around the World Can Now Study with Cornell by Signing up for a No-cost Online Global Hospitality Course
(PRWEB) January 26, 2015 -- The School of Hotel Administration (SHA) at Cornell University will offer its first no-cost massive open online course (MOOC) titled ‘Introduction to Global Hospitality Management.’ With 1 out of eleven people working in some area of hospitality, this course can help current employees and future hospitality workers understand the career growth opportunities the industry offers.
"The hospitality industry is a cornerstone of the world's economy, boasting growth well over double that of global GDP," said Nancy Weislogel, executive director of online learning and collaborative programs. "The School of Hotel Administration (SHA) has long distinguished itself as a premier institution in this space, educating generations of hospitality industry leaders. As that industry becomes increasingly global, the MOOC format offers previously unheard-of potential to bring our expertise to an international audience."
The course launches February 4th and runs for six weeks, with an estimated time commitment of eighteen hours. Participants may join after February 4th and catch up.
Renowned SHA professors Bill Carroll, Jan deRoos, Cathy Enz, and Bruce Tracey created the MOOC, which also features international industry experts.
The MOOC is intended for anyone in the industry seeking to advance, as well as individuals who are interested in -- but don't know much about -- the industry. It's also appropriate for use as an employee-development tool within hospitality industry companies. There are no prerequisites, although some proficiency with Excel will be helpful. There is no textbook; a list of supplemental resources will be provided.
Participants may audit the course for no cost and earn an Honor Code Certificate, or pursue a Verified Certificate of Achievement for a minimum fee. Nancy Moss from Edx, Cornell’s MOOC partner, commented “this course has already signed up a higher percentage of participants seeking verified certificates than we usually see. We think people see the value of having a certificate from Cornell.”
The MOOC will explore four areas of hotel and hospitality management:
Strategic management and planning (business viability and competitive markets)
Real estate and asset management (ownership and investment opportunities)
Ecommerce and marketing
Human resources management (selection, development and retention of employees)
