HOST Launches Zero-Emission, Last-Mile Transportation Service in New York City

With prices often ranging from $3 to $9 per minute, most New Yorkers have never been on a pedicab.

HOST is changing that by reimagining the traditional pedicab for 21st century urban life.

The company is launching a free 'pop-up' weekend transportation service in the East Village, which will run from 6 p.m. to midnight on October 6 and 7, as well as October 13 and 14.  East Village residents and visitors can simply flag a HOST mint-colored pedicab for a short ride within the neighborhood.

"We're proud to launch our service in the East Village, which was the original birthplace of pedicabs in New York City back in the '90s", said Jeff Thomashow, CEO of HOST.

"HOST is sponsoring free rides to encourage New Yorkers to hop-on, explore the wonder and vibrancy of the East Village, and hopefully experience first-hand that riding on a HOST pedicab is both unique and a potential game-changer for New York life."

HOST's vision is to weave its service into the fabric of the city's transportation network by better connecting local neighborhoods, making it easier for people to access mass transit, and moving crosstown.

According to Taxi and Limousine yellow taxi trip-level data, of the 100 million yellow taxi trips in Manhattan each year, approximately 70% are under two miles and just about 30% are under 1 mile. These trips move at speeds averaging just 7 to 8 miles per hour, but are typically even slower in Midtown, especially during rush hour.

"Many New Yorkers have experienced getting in a taxi only to watch pedestrians and bicyclists pass them by," Thomashow said.

That's where HOST comes in. Through this new eco-friendly transportation service, HOST can accommodate trip demand, without contributing to the overwhelming number of cars that already clog our streets.

"Congestion has environmental, economic, and quality of life implications for our city," Thomashow said. "HOST is instead introducing a sustainable last-mile solution that gets folks out of cars and supports the growth of a new cycling alternative. It's transportation, with personality."

HOST is launching with 5 of its stylish, mint pedicabs and is exploring partnerships with corporate sponsors to grow its zero-emission fleet in 2018.
