Hot Celebrity Homes: Bob Hope's UFO Home Price Slashed to $25 Million
Pompano Beach, Florida (PRWEB) January 15, 2015 -- Bob Hope's futuristic Palm Springs home is for sale and featured this week on the Top 10 Homes Spotlight at TopTenRealEstateDeals.com.
“Bob Hope House Price Cut”
Still on the market after first being listed in early 2013 with a price tag of $50 million, the Palm Springs house designed for Bob and Dolores Hope by John Lautner in 1973 and completed in 1980 is still looking for a buyer. Not too surprising that it is taking a while to sell since its UFO design is rather taste specific to Lautner fans and futuristic spaceship voyagers. Celebrity house status at $50 million hasn’t produced a buyer for the Hope house, so the asking price was recently reduced to $25 million.
Considering their generation, it’s a little surprising that the Hopes would go so far into the future in their architectural taste with a home that looks a bit like a just-landed spaceship. At 23,000 square feet under a dramatic high undulating roof, the home has distinct open spaces in the walls and ceiling which allow daylight or stars to shine through, casting shapely shadows into the interior. The curved openings also allow for stunning views across the landscape and mountains, while nestled comfortably into its well-designed desert landscaping and outdoor living areas. The house has a spa with greenhouse wall, 6 bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, indoor and outdoor pools, a pond, putting greens, and a tennis court.
Though they owned three other homes in Palm Springs, this was the Hopes’ dream home that got off to a bad start when Mrs. Hope and Lautner got into it over some interior changes she demanded to be made. The result was that Lautner disowned the project in the end, even though it was the largest private residence he had designed in his career. In addition to the Hope House, Lautner created a number of Southern California's landmark homes including the Elrod House that was featured in the James Bond movie, “Diamonds Are Forever.”
From the 1940s to the 1990s, Bob was one of America’s favorite celebrities, a multi-talented performer who excelled as a comedian, actor, singer and dancer. He is best remembered for his annual Christmas USO tours taking entertainment to the U.S. military troops around the world; always accompanied by best pals like Bing Crosby and Hollywood's latest pinup star such as Ann-Margret, Joey Heatherton and Raquel Welch. Hope was the recipient of both a Congressional Gold Medal and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, multiple Academy Award honors and has had an airport, military plane, several city streets and theaters, a school and a major PGA golf tournament named after him. Bob and Dolores were married for 69 years. He died in 2003 at the age of 100 and Dolores died in 2011 at the age of 102.
Bob and Delores Hope’s Palm Springs spaceship house, or as some refer to as their volcano house, having started out at $50 million has now been reduced to $25 million. The listing agents are Patrick Jordan and Stewart Smith of Patrick Stewart Properties in Palm Springs, California.
