How to Create a Stimulating Environment and System and Develop Good Homework and Study Skills in Your Child
Edison, NJ (PRWEB) July 26, 2013 -- ALOHA Mind Math: As a parent, how can you build a foundation to success for your child? The basics start with creating a consistent study routine and stimulating study environment conducive to learning. Parental involvement and a consistent study regimen lead to better student performance and success in school.
1. Designate a Set Learning Space.
Children need a designated room or space to study and do homework. It could be their bedroom, kitchen, or another room. Make sure there are few distractions as possible. The working space needs to be well-lit and large enough to fit your child’s assignments.
2. Prepare a Studious Environment.
Now that you have designated a space or room for your child to study, you will need to prepare the environment for learning. Select a sturdy kitchen table or desk. Obtain shelving to hold text books and reference books. Have the necessary school supplies your child needs for school assignments on hand at home. This will save both of you frustration and time if supplies are left at school.
3. Set a Homework and Study System.
Create a structure to ensure your child completes their homework and studies as soon as your child returns home from school or extra curriculum activities. If possible, allow them to have a snack while the two of you talk about the day and review the homework assignments together. This should keep your child focused until dinner time.
Then, help your child focus on studying and homework. Most parents find it is best to allow no electronics, TV, phone, games or other distractions, until their homework is completed.
If your child did not bring home the homework agenda, often you can obtain a list from the school’s website. If there is no homework that evening, some parents find that keeping the same routine instills a habit and focus. Practicing key curriculum, such as reviewing previous learned spelling words, math or science skills, history, writing or other key concepts will keep them focused.
4. Prevent Homework Overwhelm.
Homework time can lead to frustration and overwhelm. Productivity experts suggest handling the most difficult or time-consuming task first. By doing this, a child’s aggravations are lessened and confidence increases. For others, tackling the easier or more enjoyable assignments boosts their mental attitude for the tasks ahead. Either way, give continual encouragement for their efforts. Allow for a 5-minute break every so often.
5. Organize and Prepare for the Next Day of School.
Teach your child organizational skills. When one assignment is complete, require all supplies and books be put back in the proper storage bins or backpack. Make sure your child’s assignment requirements are in their backpack.
6. Plan a Nutritious Breakfast, Lunch, and Snacks.
Ensure your child begins each day with a nutritious breakfast before starting school to keep your child healthy and focused throughout the school day. Research shows that children who eat a healthy breakfast are focused and perform better in school. This is why breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day. Children’s development, attention span, and learning require healthy meals.
Providing your children with a consistent study system keeps them focused and builds a foundation to success. It also lessens stress in the family. Start the school year with an effective homework regimen, adjusting to your child’s needs, and apply throughout their education for better performance.
