Since the launch of HypothyroidMom.com last October, founder Dana Trentini has heard tragic stories from women with hypothyroidism who have lost their premature babies. She fears there are many more babies lost to maternal hypothyroidism than anyone realizes.
Founder Dana Trentini was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, an underactive thyroid, following the birth of her first son in 2006. She trusted her doctors especially when she became pregnant again in late 2008. She would later learn that her New York City doctors did not know enough about hypothyroidism, especially the dangers of thyroid disease in pregnancy. Under their care her TSH, the gold standard for testing thyroid function in mainstream medicine, reached levels far above the recommended range for pregnancy and she miscarried.
Dana went on to find a great thyroid doctor and got pregnant again with her second son. Dana suffered a placental abruption at 36 weeks. She is grateful that her doctor was aware of the connection between maternal hypothyroidism and preterm birth. Thanks to her doctor, her son made it to 36 weeks gestation and is now a healthy 3 year old boy.
With all her struggles to conceive and deliver her children, Dana vowed to research everything there was to know about this disease and warn women everywhere.
November is Prematurity Awareness Month and November 17th in particular is World Prematurity Day. Dana is determined to raise global awareness about the dangers of hypothyroidism and preterm birth in memory of all the premature babies lost to hypothyroid moms.
