IACP to Host School Resource Officer Certification Training
Indianapolis, IN (PRWEB) August 08, 2013 -- The Indiana Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), an organization that enhances public awareness of law enforcement and public safety issues, is hosting a training program for law enforcement officials wanting to become a certified School Resource Officer (SRO). The IACP’s SRO Certification Training will take place in two sessions, the first November 18, 2013, and the second April 22-23, 2014. According to a 2012 study conducted by the Office of the Indiana Attorney General, half of the sampled teachers and school administrators specifically reported that SROs are currently present in their schools. To ensure that each school throughout the state of Indiana has a trained and certified SRO, the IACP is providing a SRO Certification Training program. In order to become an SRO, officers must complete five and a half days of training total. Three days of training would be completed with the Department of Education (DOE) and two and a half days of training with the IACP. By completing both the IACP and DOE training programs, participants will not only be SRO certified, but also receive School Safety Specialist certification. Throughout the IACP’s two and a half days of training, officers will learn SRO roles and responsibilities, how to deal with juvenile emotional needs, school safety and security, crime prevention through environmental design and much more. Officers will also receive an overview of the A.L.I.C.E. program. A.L.I.C.E. is an acronym for Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate. The A.L.I.C.E. program is designed to give a person, or group of people, who may find themselves in a violent, life threatening situation, some tools that could play a vital role in their survival. The program is designed so that anybody can employ the strategies and emphasizes that one does not have to be police, or military trained, in order to survive a violent encounter. All participants need is a frame of reference to draw from when making life saving decisions under extreme pressure, similar to preparing for a school fire, or an earthquake.
