ICBA’s Cam Fine: ‘Decency Always Wins over Deceit’
Honolulu, HI (PRWEB) March 05, 2014 -- Independent Community Bankers of America® (ICBA) President and CEO Camden R. Fine spoke to community bankers gathered at ICBA’s 2014 national convention in Honolulu. Fine ran though a list of ICBA’s 2013 advocacy accomplishments on behalf of community banks, while also hitting hard on what ICBA and community bankers have yet to achieve to ensure an environment where community banks can flourish and continue to serve their local customers and communities.
Fine explained that community bankers nationwide are on a winning streak. He cited issues such as much-needed reforms to the Basel III, Qualified Mortgage and Volcker Rule regulations; stricter oversight of too-big-to-fail financial firms; regulatory relief through ICBA’s Plan for Prosperity; payments-system reforms following retailer data breaches and the unfair tax treatment of credit unions and the Farm Credit System. “The community banking presence in Washington has never been stronger,” Fine said.
Fine reminded the audience that the community banking industry’s success is due to community banker efforts. “You never give up. You never give in,” he said. “And when this beloved industry of ours is up against seemingly impossible odds, you are the ones who take a stand for what’s right.”
Fine also said community bankers’ principles are what set them apart from others in the financial industry. “Decency always wins out over deceit,” he said. “This commitment to faith, fairness and responsibility is why community banks have had such success in Washington.”
Continuing on the theme of success, Fine highlighted outstanding community banks and bankers from around the country for their dedication to their local communities, including Main Street Bank in Bingham Farms, Mich.; Meridian Bank in Malvern, Pa.; American National Bank in Oakland Park, Fla.; John Marshall Bank in Reston, Va.; Bank of Missouri in Cape Girardeau, Mo.; First National Bank in Staunton, Ill.; and Maria Contreras-Sweet of Pro-America Bank in Los Angeles.
