iFreedom Direct® Commemorates the U.S. Coast Guard's 223rd Anniversary with an Infographic Honoring Its Heroic Congressional Medal of Honor Recipient
Salt Lake City, Utah (PRWEB) August 02, 2013 -- This year marks the 223nd year of the Coast Guard’s existence. One of five U.S. Armed Forces, the Coast Guard has protected our nation’s maritime interests and environment worldwide. To commemorate this historic day, iFreedom Direct®, a Salt Lake-based VA lender, dedicates a new Coast Guard Infographic entitled "Always Ready." The title is borrowed from the U.S. Coast Guard’s motto. The graphic showcases the bravery of one Coast Guard member, Douglas Albert Munro, who received the rare Congressional Medal of Honor.
The Medal of Honor is the nation’s highest award for valor and is given sparingly to the most daring of daring individuals whose selfless acts of courage are well documented.
Munro received the honor posthumously after leading the heroic rescue expedition of Marines on Guadalcanal in 1942. The graphic summarizes his story of incredible courage.
iFreedom Direct® Special Projects Director and 23-year Army Veteran, Tim Lewis, says, “Without the courage of all our service members, America might be a much different place. So today, we give a warm THANK YOU and say happy birthday to the U.S. Coast Guard. We appreciate all its past and current members who have served to shape our country.”
On this day in 1790, the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service was authorized under Alexander Hamilton. This is known as the birth of the Coast Guard. Ten cutter vessels were built and used to enforce customs laws and prevent piracy and illegal slave trade. In 1878, the U.S. Life-Saving Service was created to answer better respond to people in shipwrecks. In 1915, the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the Life-Saving Service to form what we know as the Coast Guard.
Today, the U.S. Coast Guard is the only military organization within the Department of Homeland Security.
If you know any U.S. Coast Guard service members, take a moment today to wish them a happy birthday and share this infographic with them via our Facebook or Twitter pages. To learn more about VA loans from iFreedom Direct®, visit http://www.directvaloans.com.
