Immigration Attorney Edgardo Martinez Discusses Temporary Protected Status Extension for Haiti
Tampa, FL (PRWEB) September 17, 2015 -- The extended designation becomes effective January 23, 2016, through July 22, 2017. “This is an immigration benefit for certain people from Haiti that allows them to stay in the United States and receive a work permit while they are physically present here,” said Martinez. “After the deadline, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) will no longer accept applications.”
The first time such a status was issued to Haitians was in January 2010 after an earthquake devastated the country. According to the USCIS press release, following consultations with other federal agencies, the Department of Homeland Security determined that current conditions in Haiti support extending the designation period for current TPS beneficiaries.
The current extension, approved by Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, allows TPS re-registrants to apply for a new Employment Authorization Document (EAD). Eligible TPS Haiti beneficiaries who re-register during the 60-day period and request a new EAD will receive one with an expiration date of July 22, 2017.
“The USCIS is aware that some re-registrants may not receive their new EADs until after their current EAD expires,” said Martinez. “However, they are automatically extending current TPS Haiti EADs with a January 22, 2016, expiration date for an additional six months, which will now be valid through July 22, 2016.”
