Immuta Launches 'Projects' to Help Data Science Teams Comply with GDPR
College Park, MD (PRWEB) April 25, 2017 -- Immuta, the unified data platform for the world’s most secure organizations, today announced 'Projects' for data science teams. Projects allow teams to group collaborators, data sources, and scripts around specific business objectives. Once grouped, organizations can use projects to streamline collaboration while simultaneously embedding key GDPR concepts, such as purpose-based restrictions and audits on data. Effective immediately, Projects is now available to all Immuta customers.
“Our customers need to group data, in projects, by purpose for two reasons: first, they are keenly interested in understanding who is working on what, and what the outcomes of that work are; and second, it allows them to automate complex reporting—which is critical for GDPR compliance—that documents which data sources have been used, for which purposes, and by whom,” said Matthew Carroll, CEO, Immuta.
After logging in, an analyst or data owner can create a new project with an associated — and approved — purpose (such as predicting fraud) with the click of a button. All data subsequently accessed and used to complete a specific project will then be audited as having been used for an explicit purpose.
“We’re particularly excited about Projects because it opens the door to purpose-based restrictions on data, which has never been done before,” said Andrew Burt, chief privacy officer and legal engineer, Immuta. “Many laws and regulations only allow certain data to be used for certain purposes. When dealing with complex machine learning projects that traverse multiple data sets, it’s incredibly inefficient—and borderline untenable—to rely on case-by-case determinations from compliance departments. What companies really need are automated purpose-based controls on each and every data set.”
In addition to Projects, the company also rolled out a suite of platform improvements today, including a new virtual HDFS Layer that enables distributed batch processing in a Hadoop cluster at massive scale with paradigms like MapReduce and Spark while enforcing complex policy controls familiar in the other Immuta data-access patterns. Because data owners expose views through Immuta’s virtual file system, users can experiment with HDFS data in local mode and easily switch to a distributed mode without changing code. This also means users can experiment with data in HDFS clusters, with full audit and policy controls, without necessarily requiring a user account on the cluster at all.
“Before this release, Immuta had been solely focused on experimentation and the development of predictive models with training data and samples. Our new HDFS access layer now enables processing of data at scale, allowing the platform to cover all data science use cases in a compliant and auditable manner,” said Steve Touw, CTO, Immuta.
