Impact Investor and Advocate of Sustainable Agriculture, Philippe van den Bossche, Applauds the Growing Number of Farmers Ditching GMO Crops
New York, NY (PRWEB) December 14, 2013 -- Philippe van den Bossche, an impact investor and advocate of sustainable agriculture, responds to an article published by Treehugger.com, which reveals that more farmers are abandoning GMO crops for sustainable farming methods.
According to a December 6th, 2013 article published by Treehugger, titled, “More farmers are ditching GMO crops,” a small but growing number of American farmers are becoming skeptical about the future of genetically modified crops.
The article suggests that there are multiple reasons for the shift away from GMOs. First, the growing demand for sustainable, organic products means there is a sizable market into which non-GMO farmers can sell their products.
Second, the cost of production of non-GMO products is much lower than that of GMO farming. This allows farmers to reduce startup costs, and increase spending on land and crop diversity. Crop consultant, Aaron Bloom, a non-GMO farmer from Cherokee, Iowa, says about Iowa’s organic farmers, “We get the same or better yields, and we save money up front.” The article states that, in 2012, none of the 30 farmers that Bloom sold non-GMO seeds experienced a bad harvest, despite the massive droughts that swept over the American mid-west that year.
The third, and perhaps biggest, reason farmers are switching to sustainable agriculture, is the growing public opinion against GMO products, which may result in a change of labeling laws. If laws were enacted to demand the labeling of products, the GMO monopoly could be broken.
Philippe van den Bossche, an impact investor and advocate of sustainable agriculture, believes that farmers are making a good long-term decision by ditching GMO products. “GMOs are falling out of favor. Once GMO labeling laws are eventually passed, GMO farms will need to make a fast transition to non-GMO crops, which will likely cost them a lot of opportunity. In comparison, the farms that already produce non-GMO products, could be in for a big payday.”
Philippe van den Bossche is an impact entrepreneur and investor and Chairman/Owner of Advancing Eco Agriculture (AEA), a leading organic agricultural and horticultural consulting and manufacturing company located in Middlefield, Ohio. AEA provides consulting services and specialty nutritional products to farms throughout the United States and Canada. Mr. van den Bossche is an advocate for organic farming and agriculture.
