Improved Foam Sclerotherapy for Varicose Veins- The Whiteley-Patel Technique

Guildford, Surrey (PRWEB UK) 9 October 2014 -- The Whiteley-Patel technique is a modification of the popular Tessari method of foam sclerotherapy. Utilising the results from prize-winning research from The Whiteley Clinic, the Whiteley-Patel technique produces foam that lasts longer and that is safer than standard Tessari foam made with air.

In 2013, Salil Patel a Whiteley Clinic summer research fellow, performed a research study under the guidance of Prof. Mark Whiteley to identify which factors affected the longevity of foam made for sclerotherapy for varicose veins. This research project entailed making foam in different volumes, different syringes, using different gases – and even making foam in a walk-in freezer and up Mount Titlis in Switzerland.

The results of this project gave us a better understanding of foam sclerotherapy and these findings were presented internationally, published in an American Journal and won a National Prize at the Royal Society of Medicine this year.

Using the lessons learned from this research, Professor Mark Whiteley modified the standard 2 syringe Tessari technique to a 3 syringe Whiteley-Patel technique, to enable every patient treated with foam sclerotherapy at The Whiteley Clinic to get the benefit of this improved foam.

Although the Whiteley-Patel technique has been used for patients being treated at The Whiteley Clinic for a year now, the technique has just been published electronically in the specialist vein journal “Phlebology”.
