Inaugural NJCAA Soccer Season at SLCC Drawing Crowds
Salt Lake City, Utah (PRWEB) October 05, 2016 -- Salt Lake Community College soccer coach Mark Davis is leading SLCC’s first-ever NJCAA men’s and women’s soccer teams toward winning seasons and, as a result, is seeing the grassy hill on west side of the lush, green pitch at the College’s Taylorsville Redwood Campus lined with spectators.
“We are very pleased with our attendance,” Davis said. “We are ranked number five in attendance in the country.”
The SLCC men’s team is 9-1-1, undefeated at home and in SWAC competition headed into an Oct. 8 matchup on home turf against Trinidad College, ranked 19 in the NJCAA as of the Oct. 3 poll. SLCC’s men’s team received its first NJCAA votes in the most recent poll, but missed cracking the top 20—a win against Trinidad could change that in the next polling cycle. The women’s team is 4-1-4 and will also play Trinidad on Saturday.
“We have been getting a lot of people who have never been on campus coming to games,” Davis said. “A lot of students who have never been to an SLCC event have been stopping by our games. We have been receiving a huge amount of club teams and high school teams around the valley reach out to us to be mentors. We are so pleased with the group of kids we have received. We couldn’t be happier and we are excited for the future.”
Both teams will compete later this month in the Region 18 Tournament, hoping to qualify for the District Tournament in early November and then possibly the NJCAA National Tournament in Florida on Nov. 14.
