Increased Demand for Ultrasound Guidance Devices Expected to Drive the U.S. Vascular Access Device Market to Over $5 billion by 2020

Ultrasound guidance has been shown in numerous studies to significantly decrease the rate of failed catheter insertions. The Femoral Arterial Access with Ultrasound Trial (FAUST) demonstrated that using ultrasound led to a reduction in the attempts to cannulate the femoral artery to nearly one third of the attempts without ultrasound. Moreover, the success rate for central line placement with ultrasound guidance is over 95%, compared with 60% to 80% for central lines using the landmark technique. Ultrasound guidance is already being used for 70% of PICC placement procedures, with a continued increase expected over the forecast period. In many facilities fully equipped with ultrasound systems, ultrasound guidance is used in nearly 100% of central catheter placements.
