Indiana Auto Accident Attorney Urges Caution in Holiday Travel
Indianapolis, IN (PRWEB) November 26, 2013 -- Even though the number of travelers over the Thanksgiving holiday is expected to be slightly down this year, according to a November 20, 2013, news release from the American Automobile Association (AAA), Indiana highways are likely to be the scene of numerous car accidents, said Mike Stephenson, a personal injury attorney in Shelbyville and Indianapolis.
AAA reports that 90 percent of people traveling out of town to spend Thanksgiving with their family will do so by car, putting nearly 39 million on the road between November 27 and December 1. “With that volume of traffic, and with winter weather already reaching some parts of the country, it is just inevitable that accidents are going to happen, and some people will enter the Christmas season having to deal with the aftermath of a car crash,” Stephenson said.
The National Safety Council (NSC) estimates highway accidents will claim the lives of 436 over the 5-day period and that 46,600 will suffer injuries that require medical attention. The Indiana State Police will be stepping up enforcement efforts as part of their annual Safe Family Travel campaign, including operating sobriety check points and mobilizing patrols which will target impaired drivers and unrestrained motorists.
“Refusing to drink and drive and always wearing a seatbelt are just two of the things people can do to protect themselves when traveling by car,” Stephenson pointed out. “We recommend that, if possible, they should avoid traveling on Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, as that is expected to be the busiest day on the roads. Drivers should allow sufficient time to reach their destination and not force themselves to push on if they become fatigued. And, as always, refrain from using cellphones, texting, or consulting navigational aids while behind the wheel.”
Mike Stephenson has been successfully litigating Indiana personal injury cases since 1981, focusing on winning compensation for victims of car, truck and motorcycle accidents. Having achieved Martindale-Hubbell’s highest possible AV rating, Mike Stephenson has also ranked in state and local polls as one of Indiana’s top lawyers.
