Industry Must Cut Its Energy Use to Mitigate Climate Change
(PRWEB) October 02, 2013 -- With fresh evidence from IPCC that climate change is almost certainly caused by humans, industry must become more energy efficient, says the Institute for Industrial Productivity (IIP), one of the world’s leading experts in industrial energy efficiency.
IIP’s Executive Director Jigar V. Shah says that industry offers some of the best solutions to tackle rising emissions and mitigate climate change.
“Industrial GHG emissions currently account for around a third of the globe’s total emissions. According to the IEA, industrial energy demand could increase by as much as 44 percent over the next two decades if there is no action, particularly in emerging and developing countries. Energy efficiency is one of the best short-term solutions on offer – and there is the technology in place to do it now,” Mr Shah said.
“Energy efficiency – which means getting more from our existing energy resources – could reduce global industrial energy use by over 25 percent. If realized, that potential represents an 8 percent reduction in global energy use and a 12.4 percent reduction in global CO2 emissions. That’s equivalent to the annual emissions of 800 million passenger vehicles, 1,100 coal-fired plants, nearly 600 million homes, or 1.5 billion tons of waste.”
Enterprises stand to gain by saving up to 10-30 percent of their annual energy use – and therefore their energy budget – through better energy management. Energy management involves implementing a wide range of measures across a whole facility to help make production more energy efficient, such as energy audits, measurement and reporting, an action plan or staff training.
Once in place, these processes can also improve manufacturers’ operational efficiency, productivity, and risk management.
“The latest IPCC report has offered a sobering reminder to us all to look at our energy use. We hope that this recent scientific analysis will now focus the world’s energy more on taking action than continuing to question the science.”
