Infection Control and Infection Prevention in the NHS.
London, UK (PRWEB UK) 26 July 2017 -- In any medical environment, infection prevention and reduction of cross contamination is a necessity. Over the years there has been a huge increase on the laws, with all equipment now having to be cleanable.
In 2013 the HTM01-05 laws and recommendations further increased to include keyboards, mice and computer equipment, and as obvious as this may sound, many hospitals still do not use medical, wipeable keyboards across all areas.
Having such small budgets cannot be easy for publically funded medical sectors, however does this mean we can bypass proven patient safety?
Taking keyboards and mice as examples, this sort of mandatory hospital equipment is very difficult to clean and prevent the spreading of bacteria with the only true way of cleaning a keyboard is to run it under the tap with disinfectant wash. Issues with this include the keyboard breaking and the time consuming job of unplugging, washing and drying an important piece of equipment in a fast pace 24 hour environment.
But, these problems can all be prevented with a fully sealed, wipeable keyboard.
Keyboard Specialists (KBS) have paired up with some of the leading healthcare suppliers over the years to fully understand the needs and wants of doctors and nurses. Working with these professionals, KBS has been able to supply a range of keyboards which can be used in different sections of a hospital.
Medigenic Keyboards are the most popular choice for theatre and ward use, with a completely flay surface for fast cleaning and fully sealed design to be wiped appropriately. To further this, the Medigenic Compliance keyboard goes one step further in the advancement of technology, stopping the keyboard from working intermittently unless it is cleaned.
Medigenic Keyboards have been proven to reduce cross contamination but having a Medigenic Keyboard alone is not sufficient. Cleaning is required by doctors and nurses to ensure sufficient disinfection. The following are recommended by KBS when cleaning a keyboard:
- For multi-user equipment, hands should be washed after use. Hands should be washed with warm water with particular attention to the back of the hands, fingertips and thumbs.
- Cleaning should take place every 2 – 4 hours (This should be more prominent in environments with heavy interaction or high risk of cross-contamination, where this should be cleaned before every use)
- Medical grade disinfectants which do not contain alcohol are ideal for use.
Correct handwashing and having clean equipment is critical to prevent cross-contamination. Diligent hand washing and care by doctors and nurses paired with Keyboard Specialists Medigenic Keyboards ensure maximum protection and would decrease infections dramatically.
