Many historic arched stone bridges still accomplish their original function of bridging streams and are an integral part of the historical landscape of early America. Burr’s Mills, which is now part of Watertown, New York, was surveyed for development in 1796. The early European settlers made their living by agriculture and lumber. The area has many running streams which were dammed in 1800 in order to build grist and saw mills. A trip hammer operation was developed to make axes and other edge tools, and the first cold blast furnace was built in 1825 to supply iron for the farm implement industry. All this emerging commerce created the need to construct new roads and build arch stone bridges across the many streams in the area.
