Injury Lawyer Comments on Recent Lipitor Studies
(PRWEB) October 29, 2013 -- A series of medical studies have investigated the effects of the drug Lipitor. According to U.S. News, patients who take statin drugs like Lipitor “may slightly increase their risk for muscle and joint diseases as well as strains and sprains.” The new study measured the effects of statins on almost 14,000 military service members and veterans. It found that patients taking statins had a 19% greater chance of suffering musculoskeletal problems than patients not taking statins. In particular, patients taking statins were more likely to suffer dislocations, strains, and sprains. The lead researcher, Dr. Ishak Mansi stated, “The side effects of statins are not totally known yet. Advocating widespread use, specifically for primary prevention in otherwise healthy subjects, is unsound" (i).
This study follows medical studies and FDA warnings about a connection between statins and an increased risk of diabetes, especially in women. CBS News reported on one such study of almost 154,000 postmenopausal women over a period of 7 years. The study found that “statin use was associated with an almost 50% chance of developing the disease [type-2 diabetes].” The author of the study, Dr. Annie Culver stated, “There is a tendency to believe that drugs are the answer, when it is clear that eating well, exercising, and making other lifestyle changes are hugely important for lowering diabetes and cardiovascular risk” (ii).
Attorney Paul d’Oliveira stated, “The recent revelation that Lipitor can increase the risk of type-2 diabetes in women has led to an increasing number of lawsuits.
