Inmar Foundation, Girl Scout Council Earn NASA, Qualcomm Grants for Girls’ Robotics Team
Winston-Salem, NC (PRWEB) December 23, 2014 -- Inmar, a company that operates intelligent commerce networks, today announced that Inmar, in its partnership with the Girl Scouts Peaks To Piedmont Council, have received a $6,000 matching grant from NASA and another $1,000 grant from Qualcomm for the All-Girls NC FIRST Robotics Team. The grants will provide the funding necessary for the Piedmont Triad’s first-ever all-girl team to compete in the NC FIRST Robotics competition in March 2015.
The Inmar Foundation sponsors the All-Girls NC First Robotics Team and provides mentors who coach and guide the girls on building their competition robot and provides a place to build and house the team’s first robot.
“I couldn’t be more proud of our girls’ team for landing this kind of prestigious support for their efforts to represent young women in the passionate pursuit of science, technology, engineering and math,” said Jennifer Mauldin, Inmar’s Executive In Residence and co-founder of The Inmar Foundation. “This program is designed to go beyond education to inspiration, and these young women will learn so much about math, science, language arts, business, finance, computer science, fabrication and mentorship while fostering teamwork. It’s exciting to see how they will inspire others through their hard work and the example they will set for their peers.”
The NC FIRST Program is a non-profit effort to inspire students to develop a passion for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The robotics competition program is the premier engineering challenge for high school students. Teams of students, working closely with teachers and volunteer mentors, have six weeks to conceptualize, design, build, program, modify and test a robot to participate in a competition that changes each year.
The NASA grant application was made possible through collaboration with the Girl Scouts Peaks To Piedmont Council, with the help of Valerie Wooten, the council’s program manager, working with Melissa Wittner, Inmar’s Vice President of Technology. NASA supports the NC FIRST Robotics Competition program by awarding grants to rookie teams such as Inmar’s All-Girls First team, as well as sustaining grants for existing teams.
Inmar conducted the team’s first information session in September and are now holding weekly team meetings to recruit girls and conduct start-up activities. Meetings are held every Tuesday night from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Inmar building (Dash conference room) located at 635 Vine St., Winston-Salem NC. All girls 9th through 12th grade are invited to join Inmar’s newly formed rookie team. Girls who wish to participate are being accepted through December 31, 2014.
