Innovative LWD Equipment Proves to Save More Time and Money in Roadway Earth Embankment Construction
Columbus, OH (PRWEB) October 30, 2013 -- Through risk and cost analysis, Resource International, Inc. (Rii) has determined that the innovative Light Weight Deflectometer (LWD) equipment will save time and money in QA/QC construction projects when replacing outdated equipment.
The LWD is a light weight, portable tool used to determine the stiffness of unbound materials during construction by measuring the deflection under an applied load. This device is hand operated and takes measurements of the deflection of the compacted soil that is impacted by a falling weight. This new method is used to measure in-place soil parameters such as stiffness and strength.
Rii's Asset Management and Pavement Engineering Department determined the risks and costs associated with the use of conventional and innovative quality assurance and quality control programs in three major earth embankments. These include chemically stabilized subgrades constructed in accordance with ODOT SS 1120, 878, and 1015.
Rii also examined alternate testing programs, frequency, productivity and cost for both conventional versus Light Weight Deflectometer (LWD) and other innovative methods. The statistical risk analysis is performed to show alpha and beta risk factors, and the reliability of LWD criterion as RQL and AQL in embankment construction versus nuclear gauge. The LWD criterion is checked against measurements with Automated Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (ADCP) and Falling Weight Deflectometer.
As a result of risk and cost analysis, the substantial cost savings of LWD alone, and its applicability as a MEPDG verification, it is recommended as the alternate replacement of nuclear gauge. The results of other DOT studies support this recommendation.
