Insect Repellant in the US Industry Market Research Report Now Available from IBISWorld
New York, NY (PRWEB) November 12, 2014 -- The Insect Repellent Manufacturing industry produces consumer products that deter insects from landing on a particular surface. Consumers purchase repellents to avoid insect bites as well as prevent insect-borne diseases such as the West Nile virus, malaria and Lyme disease. Industry products range from skin applicants, such as lotions, to aerosol sprays for clothing. In the five years to 2014, rising disposable income levels and the growth of pharmacies and drug stores have translated to strong industry growth. In addition, manufacturers are introducing plant-based repellents to attract eco-conscious consumers and appeal to shifting consumer tastes against potentially toxic chemical inputs. As a result, revenue for the Insect Repellant industry is expected to increase at an annualized 6.5% to $159.3 million.
According to IBISWorld Industry Analyst Omar Khedr, “Demand for insect repellents varies by region.” In the northeast, demand for industry products is largely seasonal, with spring and summer coinciding with higher demand due to a greater number of outdoor activities. Meanwhile, the much warmer southern states, which have larger mosquito populations and long flea seasons, generate steady demand for industry products.
Industry operators are slowly moving away from products that include potentially harmful chemical ingredients to plant-based natural alternatives. Although DEET-based repellents are still widely used, a range of repellents now incorporate a host of natural insecticides, including castor oil, lemon eucalyptus, neem oil and peppermint. “These products have proven extremely popular among consumer, contributing to the industry's growth,” says Khedr. In 2014, industry revenue is expected to increase 4.2%.
In the next five years, industry operators are expected to invest in research and development to produce more plant-based natural repellents. As a result, the industry's overall product line will diversify. Rising disposable income levels during this time and a growing consumer preference for natural products will contribute to steady demand for industry goods.
