Interlocking Concrete Pavement Industry Outlook
Chantilly, VA (PRWEB) July 11, 2014 -- New home construction, acceleration in sales of existing homes, a rebound in construction spending in the public sector, and an increase in commercial construction all contributed to a steady growth year in 2013 for the U.S. and Canadian segmental concrete pavement industry. This year’s survey respondents included 33 manufacturing companies of which 78% reported double-digit growth averaging 11.5% over last year. For the U.S., the annual industry sales survey indicated an 11.8% increase in segmental concrete paving production in 2013 expanding from 414 million to 463 million square feet. In Canada, segmental concrete paving production increased by 9.9% from 72 million to 79 million square feet. The total 2013 U.S. and Canadian segmental paving market is estimated at 542 million square feet.
ICPI Chairman David Pitre said that the increase in 2013 sales “demonstrates continued demand for pavement systems with versatile design options, low maintenance and environmental benefits. The construction industry is experiencing an economic recovery that supports the expansion of our market share in residential applications. The growth rate is even higher in commercial and municipal applications.”
The industry also experienced per capita sales growth in U.S. and Canada even with a slight increase in population. In the U.S., per capita consumption increased from 1.3 sf in 2012 to 1.5 sf while the U.S. population grew by approximately 1 million (from 313 to 314 million) over the previous year. In Canada, per capita consumption increased from 2.1 sf in 2012 to 2.3 sf while population grew by approximately 1 million (from 34 to 35 million) over the previous year.
At 75% of all sales, the residential market continues to be the primary driver for segmental concrete pavement sales. Commercial sales, which includes municipal and industrial, claimed an increased share over last year by 3% or 25% of the total market in 2013.
David Pitre continued, “Reaching 25% commercial sales is a key success indicator for ICPI in reaching its vision. This is an achievement for ICPI and the segmental concrete pavement industry. It demonstrates that ICPI is delivering on it mission to increase awareness, acceptance and use of segmental concrete pavement systems in North America.”
Interlocking concrete pavers continue to be the most popular of all segmental paving products in North America. The residential market continues to be the primary driver for segmental concrete pavement sales in North America. However, there has been an increase in commercial market sales over last year.
Permeable interlocking concrete pavement continues to be a high growth product as a means to meet national, provincial, state and local regulations to reduce stormwater runoff. A significant increase in PICP residential sales likely can be attributed to the increasing popularity of municipalities issuing stormwater credits/reimbursements to homeowners who reduce their impermeable surfaces with PICP.
The trend continues toward larger units with concrete paving slabs in commercial and residential pedestrian applications. However, a 5% increase in commercial applications indicates gaining popularity of larger units in this market segment.
ICPI’s industry sales survey represents the most accurate and up-to-date sales information available for the segmental concrete pavement industry in North America. The 2014 survey reports on 2013 sales data and estimates annual paver sales from a composite average to the universe of paver manufacturers. The survey was conducted by Industry Insights, specializing in surveys for trade and professional organizations.
