International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation Reveals Impressive Speaker List
Dallas (PRWEB) March 14, 2014 -- The International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT) has announced its speakers for the 34th Annual Meeting and Scientific Sessions. The prestigious list includes keynote speaker and Nobel Prize winner Alvin E. Roth, Ph.D. Professor of Economics at Stanford University, USA, and Sir Terence English, KBE, FRCS, from Oxford, United Kingdom.
Roth is the Craig and Susan McCaw Professor of Economics at Stanford University, and the George Gund Professor Emeritus of Economics and Business Administration at Harvard where his research, teaching and consulting interests are in game theory, experimental economics and market design.
Among the markets Roth has designed with the game theory knowledge is the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). Roth redesigned the existing NRMP to include correctly placing both unmarried and married residents. Approximately 25 thousand doctors annually find their first employment as a resident at American hospitals through Roth’s redesigned NRMP.
Applying his game theory expertise, Roth created the New England Program for Kidney Exchange, where he became one of the founders and designers of kidney exchange in the United States. His program helps incompatible patient-donor pairs find life-saving, compatible kidneys for transplantation.
This success led Roth and Lloyd S. Shapley to the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2012 for the theory of stable allocations and the practice of market design.
During the Annual Meeting and Scientific Sessions, Roth will speak about “Organ Allocation Policy and the Decision to Donate.”
Also at this year’s ISHLT event, English will be receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award in conjunction with delivering his “Follow Your Star” lecture.
A retired cardiac surgeon, English resides in Oxford but spent his professional life in Cambridge. Appointed to Papworth and Addenbrooke’s hospitals, his main surgical interest became heart transplantation and in 1979, English performed Britain’s first successful heart transplant.
In 1980, English was appointed Director of the British Heart Foundation Research Group at Papworth where his leadership led the hospital to achieve an international reputation for heart, heart-lung and lung transplantation. Because of this and other contributions to surgery, English was made Knight Commander of the British Empire in 1991.
