From now until the end of November the Internationally Renowned Bodega Sanchez Romate, known for producing the world’s best Spanish brandies, is holding a competition that will culminate with Cardenal Mendoza Golden Week commemorating its 130th anniversary of the first solera Cardenal Mendoza Brandy.

In addition to the gold goblet and trip for two to Jerez, Spain, three additional prizes will be awarded to the photo that garners the most votes in September, October and November. In each of these months, one person will win a bottle of a very rare, limited edition brandy Non Plus Ultra, a 50-year old Cardenal Mendoza with only 800 bottles produced per year from 38 casks. Each bottle is valued at $600 each.
The golden cup, Copa Mendoza, is currently being crafted by a local Jerez artisan. It is fashioned from 22 carat gold weighs just over a half pound and measures 4.3 inches by 3.14 inches. The actual value of the cup will be determined by the market price on the day the cup is presented to the winner.
Cardenal Mendoza is among the finest of the Spanish brandies, aged for an average of 15 to 50 years using the solera system: a process for aging the brandy by fractional blending in a way that the finished product is a mixture of ages, with the average age gradually increasing as the process continues over many years.
Recognized worldwide for its distinguished taste and unique packaging, the brandies are available in four expressions, Cardenal Mendoza Clasico, Cardenal Mendoza “Carta Real”, Cardenal Mendoza “Non Plus Ultra” and the recently introduced Cardenal Mendoza “Angelus.”

Cardenal Mendoza brandy was first produced in 1887, as an exclusive brandy to be enjoyed by the family and close friends of the bodega’s founders, Sanchez Romate. There are three varieties of Cardenal Mendoza: Clasico, Carta Real, Non Plus Ultra and a Orange Liquor called Cardenal Mendoza Angelus. Made from the airen grape, Cardenal Mendoza is matured for between at least 15 and 50 years, in barrels previously used by Bodega Sanchez Romate to make either Pedro Ximenez or Oloroso Sherry Wine. Its alcoholic volume is between 40 and 45 proof. Since 1909 Bodega Sanchez Romate has been Official Purveyor to the House of Lords, and in 1917, it was appointed Official Purveyor to the Sacred Apostolic Palace of the Vatican.
