Internships.com Survey Reveals Companies Are Offering More Summer Internships in 2014
Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 23, 2014 -- A new internships survey reveals that employer demand is up in the burgeoning internships market – companies are hiring more interns than ever before, and the data shows a continued growth and maturing of the internships market. Internship seeker demand is also on the rise: 67% of the college class of 2013 completed at least one internship during college – a 6% increase over last year and further growth is expected as students gear up for the 2014 summer internships season.
Internships.com, the world’s largest internships marketplace, has released new survey results that reveal why employers hire interns, who gets hired, why students intern and how the internships calendar is affected by seasonality.
Conducted on November 26th, 2013 Internships.com surveyed more than 1,800 students & recent graduates as well as over 440 human resources and recruitment professionals on their internship activities and intentions.
The survey results show the continued growth and maturation of the internships market for both seekers and employers– as companies plan to hire significantly more interns in 2014 than they did in 2013:
Highlights:
Employer Demand is Up as Programs Become More Structured
• 56% of companies plan to hire more interns in 2014 than they did in 2013
• 62% of companies plan to implement a more structured internship program in 2014 as the market matures
Employers Hire Year-Round; Students Search Predominantly in the Summer
• 84% of employers offer summer internships, while 80% offer fall/winter internships and 78% offer spring internships – a consistent availability of year-round inventory
• 80% of students consider participating in summer internships while only 49% consider fall/winter internships and 51% consider spring internships. Summer internships are thus the most competitive for students to obtain.
Who Gets Hired and Why?
• Employers value interview performance and relevant internships / experience as the most important factors when hiring an intern
• 73% of companies with more than 100 employees list “finding full-time employees” as the main reason why they hire interns.
Good News for Recent Graduates: 88% of employers would consider internship applications from recent college graduates.
Students and Employers Love Internships: 84% of employers say hiring interns was a positive experience while 87% of students polled say that their internship was a positive experience.
Getting a Head Start: Students are interning earlier in their college careers. 48% land their first internship before their junior year.
