interRel Consulting Celebrates Dr. Troy’s Pi Day
Arlington, Texas (PRWEB) March 13, 2015 -- interRel Consulting has officially made “Dr. Troy’s Pi Day” into an annual interRel “holiday” to be celebrated with all the pomp and circumstance deserving of the ratio of a circle's diameter to its circumference. The holiday is named in honor of Dr. Troy Seguin, interRel’s resident mathematician, who has been championing Pi Day throughout his 8+ years at the company. interRel will add some “filling” to Pi Day by contributing $1,000 to the National Girls Collaborative Project (NGCP), an organization that encourages girls to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
Pi day commemorates the mathematical constant Pi (the Greek letter π) and is celebrated on March 14 because 3, 1, and 4 are the first 3 digits of pi. Pi is famous as an irrational and transcendental number, which continues infinitely without repetition or pattern. The first large scale celebration of Pi Day was organized by Larry Shaw at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, CA. Math enthusiasts commemorate the holiday by eating pie while telling awful, never-ending punny jokes involving Pi (e.g. Did you know that 3.14% of all sailors are Pi rates?). Pi Day 2015 is considered “ultimate” Pi Day because on 3.14.15 at 9:26:53 the date and time corresponds to the first 10 digits of pi (π = 3.141592653), which happens only once every hundred years.
Dr. Troy recounts Pi Day’s early beginnings, “I started celebrating it with my colleagues who happened to be on the same project with me. We would generally eat pie. It has grown into a company-wide event that includes me sending emails to the entire company with colorful anecdotes about famous historical mathematicians.” Such emails include the tragic story of Georg Cantor, whose contributions were ridiculed during his life and not fully appreciated until after his death; Paul Erdӧs who was so prolific with his academic publications that mathematicians created their own form of the “Kevin Bacon Number” that describes the number of degrees of separation between their publications and Erdӧs’s publication; and even Pythagoras, the creator of the Pythagorean theorem taught in school, who is rumored to have murdered a student of his that disproved one of his fundamental mathematical beliefs (something we do not widely condone at interRel).
Dr. Troy’s Pi Day festivities will include custom t-shirts, delicious Pi pies, a social media countdown of the 3.14 days of Pi with endless trivia, jokes, contests, prize giveaways and some educational videos about the limitless possibilities of mathematics. Dr. Troy has been awarded his very first personal hashtag: #PiDay4DrTroy. In support of Dr. Troy and the Seguin family, interRel will make donations to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
