IPad and Cloud POS Provider, Digital Reality, Inc., Delivers Call to Action for All Windows XP Users
New York, NY (PRWEB) May 23, 2014 -- Just a month after Microsoft Windows XP stopped offering customers free updates and support, Digital Reality, Inc., a provider of Point of Sale (POS) solutions for the restaurant and retail industries, is warning consumers to update their computer systems. The company is reaching out to the reported 17% of tablet and desktop computer users that are still using Windows XP software as their operating system. Windows XP has been in operation for 12 years and has led the computer system industry during this time period, but stopped supporting this system as of April 8, 2014.
Digital Reality, Inc. explains that switching from an XP system to a newer one is critical, claiming that without the software upgrades and updates, users are exposing their laptops, desktops, and mobile devices to a number of problems. Malware, viruses, and spyware pose major risks, according to Digital Reality, Inc., and could put businesses and home networks in danger of losing secure data.
"For home users, this means sensitive personal information could be shared unwillingly. Business users will have a difficult time protecting confidential information, including customer data and credit card information," says the CEO of Digital Reality, Inc., Eric Catania.
Catania is also concerned that the security breaches that stem from unprotected Windows XP software could lead to costly fines for merchants who can no longer adhere to Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliance regulations. As a result, this could affect retail POS and restaurant POS systems, and put customer information at risk.
Businesses and homeowners are not the only ones that could be affected by keeping Windows XP as an operating system. A Washington Post report shows that out of the millions of U.S. government computers, 10% were projected to miss the April deadline to upgrade their operating systems, potentially exposing classified information. In addition, a large percentage of ATMs across the nation are still running on Windows XP, and only 38% were expected to upgrade their systems by Microsoft's April 8 deadline.
Despite the large number of users that continue to use Windows XP, Catania believes that Microsoft made the right move, explaining that technology is designed to expand and move forward.
