This major U.S. event will welcome an international parade of ships into Baltimore in celebration of the Star-Spangled Banner and the National Anthem. A ten day event, ships from the U.S. Navy, Britain, Canada and Tall Ships will all be arriving and lead up to the main event featuring an air show by the Blue Angels, activities, fireworks and events all around the famous Inner Harbor of Baltimore and other historic sites including Ft. McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, Star-Spangled Banner Flag House and the U.S. Naval Academy.
Riga, Latvia
The Latvian capital Riga is celebrating for being named the European Capital of Culture in 2014. Events will be occurring throughout the year and begin on January 17th, 2014. Concerts, historic events, new exhibitions including the 1914 Exhibition in honor of the centennial of the beginning of WWI, are just a few of the hundreds of events and activities honoring Riga and its past and future. Other special events will include the World Choir Games, the biggest event in terms of participants with over 20,000 singers from around the world as well as the Staro Riga Light Festival, Europe’s largest festival of light.
Umea, Sweden
The second city named 2014 European Capital of Culture, this historic and picturesque city is located in northern Sweden. Relatively young, this thriving university city is home to just over 115,000 residents and is known for its arts, shopping, theatre and cultural sites. The most northerly city ever named a European Capital of Culture, Umea will be celebrating its title throughout the year. Festivals, projects, symphonies, exhibits, storytelling and tours represent just some of the almost daily activities occurring throughout the year.
