ISO 45001 Standard Pushes Forward Following International Meeting
Milford, PA (PRWEB) October 10, 2017 -- Clarion Safety Systems, a leading designer and manufacturer of safety signs and safety labels, is pleased to share that the ISO 45001 standard is pushing forward following an international meeting held in Malaysia in the end of September. ISO 45001 Occupational Safety and Health Management Systems is a new, global occupational health and safety management system standard in development by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO).
The meeting came on the heels of a July vote by the U.S. technical advisory group (TAG) for ISO 45001, which overwhelmingly approved the second version of the draft international standard (DIS) – with over 80% of participating members voting in favor of it.
Momentum continued to build for the standard at the September meeting, held by the committee in charge of ISO 45001, ISO/PC 283, and attended by 32 member countries. The group focused its 6-day discussions on critical comments to the standard, allowing the remainder of comments to be addressed by the next revision of the standard following its initial publication.
According to TAG officials, this gathering may have been the final international meeting on the development of ISO 45001 prior to its release.
As next steps for the standard, ISO’s Central Secretariat will determine if any of the proposed changes are technical in nature, which will result in the standard moving to become a final draft international standard (FDIS). If this is not the case, ISO/PC 283’s leadership will determine whether an FDIS is needed. If an FDIS is bypassed, the standard’s publication is expected in late 2017. If there is an FDIS, the publication will be slightly later, likely in March 2018.
"The ISO 45001 standard has been four years in development. When published, it will level the playing field for worker safety and health in organizations and their supply chains around the world. It will also create opportunities for organizations to create value, integrating safety, health, quality, environmental and asset (maintenance) management using a consistent risk-based approach,” says Kathy A. Seabrook, member of the U.S. Delegation to PC 283/ISO 45001 and Vice chair of the U.S. ISO 45001 TAG.
Clarion is an active member of the U.S. TAG to ISO 45001. Through Peckham and Clarion’s Standards Compliance Director, Angela Lambert, the company has made significant contributions to preparing U.S. positions for each draft of ISO 45001.
ISO 45001 is set to replace OHSAS 18001. It’s also closely aligned in its structure with ISO 9001 Quality Management Systems and ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems so organizations can efficiently integrate ISO 45001 requirements into their existing management systems.
