IT Industry Gains 7,300 Jobs in January
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) February 29, 2016 -- The IT industry gained 7,300 jobs for the month of January, according to the latest employment numbers released from the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics released on Friday, February 5, 2016.
According to the Economic Situation Report, the IT industry’s job growth is down by 26.2 percent over December’s gain of 9,900 jobs. IT job data is collected from multiple sectors, including the data processing, hosting and related services subsector, the computer and electronic product manufacturing subsector, the computer systems design and related services subsector, and the management and technical consulting services subsector.
Data processing, hosting and related services lost 100 jobs last month after a loss of 1,600 jobs in December 2015. The subsector now sits at 298,900 jobs, a 2.8 percent increase over the 290,700 jobs gained in January 2015. This industry data includes computer programmers, computer support specialists, computer systems analysts, application developers, and systems software developers.
The computer and electronic product manufacturing subsector, which includes computer hardware engineers, computer software engineers (applications and systems software), electrical and electronic engineering technicians and equipment assemblers, and semiconductor processors gained 1,100 jobs last month. Over the last 12 months, the subsector has lost 1,700 jobs.
Computer systems design and related services, a part of the professional and business services sector gained 3,400 jobs in January. Over the last 12 months, the subsector has increased by 5.2 percent or 96,900 jobs. Management and technical consulting services grew by 2,200 jobs, a 0.17 percent increase over the month prior, and a 7.98 percent increase over January 2015.
Total nonfarm payroll employment across all industries increased by 151,000 in January while the unemployment rate changed little at 4.9 percent. Over the last 12 months, the number of unemployed persons and the unemployment rate were down by 1.1 million and 0.8 percentage point, respectively. Retail trade, food services and drinking places, health care, and manufacturing all experienced gains last month.
