IT Jobs Up 9 Percent in July, Report Says
Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) August 31, 2016 -- Employment in the IT industry grew by 8,400 jobs in July, according to preliminary numbers released by the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Economic Situation Report on Friday, August 5, 2016.
The IT industry’s employment gains for the month of July represent a 9 percent increase over June’s gain of 7,700 jobs. Over the last 12 months, the industry has gained 129,300 jobs. IT job data is collected from multiple sectors, including the data processing, hosting and related services subsector, the computer electronic product manufacturing subsector, the computer systems design and related services subsector, and the management and technical consulting services subsector.
The data processing, hosting and related services sector lost 2,300 jobs in July. Since July 2015, the sector has lost 300 jobs. This industry data includes computer programmers, computer support specialists, computer systems analysts, application developers, and systems software developers.
The computer and electronic product manufacturing subsector continued to experience job losses, decreasing by 3,100 jobs in July to 1,036,200 employed persons. The subsector, which includes computer hardware engineers, computer software engineers (applications and systems software), electrical and electronic engineering technicians and equipment assemblers, and semiconductor processors, has lost 15,800 jobs over the past 12 months.
The computer systems design and related services subsector, a part of the professional and business services sector, gained 8,200 jobs in July. The gains represent a 272 percent increase over June’s employment gain of 2,200 jobs. Since July 2015, the sector has gained 78,000 jobs.
The management and technical consulting services subsector gained 5,600 jobs in July, an 8.9 percent decrease over June’s gain of 6,100 jobs. Over the past 12 months, the subsector has gained a total of 67,400 jobs.
Across all industries, total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 255,000 jobs in July, while the unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.9 percent. Last month, job growth mostly occurred in professional and business services, healthcare, and leisure and hospitality.
