OTTAWA, ON (PRWEB) January 12, 2015 -- The communities in and around Windsor-Essex are invited to visit It’s An Honour!, a travelling exhibit about the Canadian Honours System that is now making its way across the country. Until July 2015, it will journey to schools, community centres, special events and small towns to connect with and inspire visitors of all ages. From January to the end of April, the exhibit will travel through Ontario.

Mounted in a specially designed 1000-square-foot vehicle, the exhibit showcases stories of great Canadians who have been recognized for their extraordinary achievements with national honours such as the Order of Canada, Decorations for Bravery and Military Valour Decorations. Featuring interpretative panels, multimedia elements and artifacts, this unique space provides an opportunity for visitors to learn more about these honours through an interactive learning experience.

WHEN & WHERE:

Windsor, ON

  • Wednesday, January 14 and Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Willistead Manor (1899 Niagara Street, Windsor)

     o Classes from King Edward Public School and St. Anne Catholic Elementary School will be invited to visit throughout the school day.
     o The exhibit will be open to the general public from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

  • Friday, January 16, 2015 at Willistead Manor

     o The exhibit will be open to the general public from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Tecumseh, ON

  • Monday, January 19 and Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at Tecumseh Vista Academy (11665 Shields Street, Tecumseh)

     o Classes from Tecumseh Vista Academy will be invited to visit throughout the school day.
     o The exhibit will be open to the general public from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

LaSalle, ON

  • Friday, January 23, 2015 at Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School (2555 Sandwich West Parkway, LaSalle)

     o Classes from Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School will be invited to visit throughout the school day.
     o The exhibit will be open to the general public from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

  • Saturday, January 24, 2015 at Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School

     o The exhibit will be open to the general public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Amherstburg, ON

  • Monday, January 26, and Tuesday, January 27, 2015 at Amherstburg Public School (252 Hamilton Drive, Amherstburg)

     o On Tuesday, January 27, Dr. Howard McCurdy, Member of the Order of Canada, will present the Governor General’s Caring Canadian Award to Amherstburg resident and volunteer Mrs. Nancy Phillips at 10:00 a.m. at the exhibit.      o Classes from Amherstburg Public School will be invited to visit throughout the school day on both days
     o The exhibit will be open to the general public from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on both days

Kingsville / Essex, ON

  • Friday, January 30 and Saturday, January 31, 2015 at the Canadian Transportation Museum and Heritage Village (6155 Arner Townline, Country Road 23, Kingsville)

     o The exhibit will be open to the general public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

WHAT:

Visitors can catch a glimpse of insignia and medals, discover the unique stories of many honours recipients and watch a hologram message from former Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield. Throughout their visit, visitors can also learn more on the role and responsibilities of the Governor General of Canada and how to nominate deserving individuals from their community for national honours. It is accessible to everyone and admission is free.

Since summer 2013, the exhibit has travelled through Saskatchewan, the Northwest Territories, Yukon, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Quebec. In September 2013, His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, officially launched the exhibit at Henry Wise Wood Senior High School, in Calgary, Alberta.

This exhibit is made possible through the generosity of The Taylor Family Foundation as a tribute to the women, men and youth of Canada whose achievements, courage and dedication to service exemplify the heart and soul of our nation.
