Italian Team Unveils New Approach to Radical Mesothelioma Surgery, According to Surviving Mesothelioma
Raleigh, NC (PRWEB) December 12, 2016 -- A new report details a novel approach to the radical mesothelioma surgery known as extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP). Surviving Mesothelioma has just published an article on the report. Click here to read it now.
EPP surgery involves the removal of the mesothelioma tumor, the pleura, the diaphragm, and one lung. The traditional approach, which requires a large chest incision and separation of the rib case, carries a high risk of complication and death.
But, according to a report in the journal Innovations, thoracic surgeons from two Italian university hospitals have devised a way to perform this mesothelioma surgery in a less invasive way.
“Our approach is unique and differed from the previously reported cases because we used one skin incision and two small intercostal incisions with videothoracoscopic viewing without rib spreading,” explains lead author Dr. Francesco Paolo Caronia with the Mediterranean Cancer Institute.
Doctors say the mesothelioma patient who underwent the modified mesothelioma surgery is doing well 11 months later with no recurrence of his cancer.
“Whether or not to undergo surgery and which type of approach to have is one of the most difficult treatment decisions many mesothelioma patients will have to make, “ says Alex Strauss, Managing Editor of Surviving Mesothelioma. “A less invasive approach to EPP could open up more options for certain patients.”
