James D. McChesney, Ph.D., Recognized for Focus on Natural Products Chemistry

Dr. McChesney has been credited with numerous career achievements, including the conception and implementation of the National Center for Natural Products Research at the University of Mississippi campus in Oxford; design and development of a third generation taxane anticancer agent (TPI 287), which is now in clinical development; and design of a new 8-aminoquinoline anti-malarial agent that has reduced hemolytic toxicity (NPC 1161B), which is in advanced preclinical development.
Following a lifelong interest in nature, Dr. McChesney received a Bachelor of Science in chemical technology from Iowa State University. He went on to attend Indiana University, where he completed a Master of Arts in botany, as well as a Ph.D. in organic chemistry in 1965. Upon completing formal education, Dr. McChesney joined the University of Kansas as a member of the faculty. He held this position for more than a decade before accepting a faculty position with the University of Mississippi in 1978. While serving in this role, Dr. McChesney was also appointed director of the Research Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
From 1996 to 2003, Dr. McChesney served as the vice president of development with Napro Biotherapeutics. He was later recognized as a chief scientific officer with Tapestry Pharmaceuticals and ChromaDex, Inc. Until 2017, Dr. McChesney also served as the principal of Ironstone Separations, Inc. Since founding Cloaked Therapeutics, LLC, in 2014, he has served as the CEO of the company.
In recognition of his contributions to the field of natural products research, Dr. McChesney was named a fellow of the American Society of Pharmacognosy (ASP) and The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Recognized as an F.A.P. Barnard Professor with the University of the Mississippi, Dr. McChesney was also honored at the International Conference on the Science of Botanicals in 2014. He maintains involvement with a wide range of industry organizations, including the American Chemical Society and AAAS. A respected voice in the scientific community, he has obtained 45 patents and contributed more than 200 peer-reviewed articles to scientific publications.
