Jason Hope Comments on Register's Article on Government Accountability Office to Study Internet of Things
Scottsdale, AZ (PRWEB) July 15, 2015 -- US lawmakers have asked the Government Accountability Office to determine the risk and benefit of the Internet of Things, according to an article in the Register. Jason Hope believes this fact and some of the backlash that has come from it will lead to more scrutiny of the security concerns of the Internet of Things, which could be good for consumers.
In the June 25 article entitled "We need to know about the Internet of Things, say US Senators," Richard Chirgwin of the Register talks about the assessment taking place under the Government Accountability Office, which was sparked by a letter written to Comptroller General Gene Dodaro by a bipartisan group of US senators how were stating their concern about whether or not the government or any of its agencies have a plan for dealing with the Internet of Things.
The article also quotes Eugene Kaspersky, who indicates that the Internet of Things should be named the Internet of Threats, because of the security problems surrounding connecting the entire home to the Internet. Kaspersky believes that innocent items, like a Smart TV, could be turned into venues through which the government or criminals can spy on the general population.
"Is the government going to spy on us through our TVs? That's hard to say," said Jason Hope. "However, it's crucial that we have laws in place now to protect us later. After all, the potential is there. Hopefully the Government Accountability Office will be able to shed some light onto what needs to be done through this probe."
Through the probe, the group has been asked to determine if the government needs to make any laws that will help with the establishment of the Internet of Things.
