Jason Sowell Recognized as Lightning Community Hero
TAMPA, FL (PRWEB) March 09, 2015 -- Current of Tampa Bay Founder, Jason Sowell, was honored as the Tampa Bay Lightning’s 31st Community Hero of the season, Tuesday, March 3, during the first period of the game against the Buffalo Sabres. Sowell, who was recognized for his work with the Laundry Project, was awarded a $50,000 donation on behalf of the Lightning Foundation and the Lightning Community Heroes program. Sowell will donate the money to Current, Positive Spin and Tampa Urban Young Life.
“I am truly honored and humbled to be recognized by the Tampa Bay Lightning,” said Sowell. “The support Current and myself have received over the years is such a blessing and has allowed our team to make a substantial impact in so many communities.”
After participating in several overseas mission trips, Sowell decided to focus his efforts on local U.S. cities by bringing hope to neighborhoods through tangible projects. In 2008, Jason founded Current of Tampa Bay with the goal of educating young adults on social initiatives while mobilizing them to bring about change. Current’s most prevalent program, the Laundry Project, assists lower-income individuals and families by covering all expenses and providing necessary items required to wash clothes and linens.
Since its inception, the Laundry Project has washed more than 42,900 loads of laundry for an estimated 20,000 individuals in 22 cities across the country. With the support received from the Lightning Foundation and the Lightning Community Heroes program, Sowell plans to increase projects and families served in the Tampa Bay area.
