The event evolves into a voluntary “cuddle laboratory.” The experience is designed to foster wellness and community. Inspired by the format created by Reid Mihalko and Marcia Basczynski over a decade ago, Jean Franzblau's Cuddle Sanctuary workshops last just under three hours. Workshops start with an opening circle where the leader invites the group to introduce themselves and sets expectations for the event. Then the group pairs up and practices saying “No thank you” to offers of touch. This reminds everyone that all touch is with permission. There is more practice of boundaries and cuddle etiquette, and then a series of touch optional exercises. As attendees (cuddlers) get more comfortable, they can choose to arrange themselves in various cuddling positions throughout the room. Areas can be designated for spooning, backrubs, silently sitting, laying side-by-side, holding hands, eye gazing and other nurturing experiences.
