Miami, FL (PRWEB) November 17, 2014 -- Ingredients for potentially dangerous prescription drugs have been found in over-the-counter dietary supplements, even though these ingredients were recalled for safety reasons years ago, according to a recent study that came as no surprise to drug injury lawyer Jeffrey D. “The U.S. Food and Drug Administration needs to do more to protect the health and well-being of consumers taking seemingly safe dietary supplements,” said DeCarlo, who is based in Miami, Fla., but handles drug injury cases nationwide. “People rightly assume that products contain the ingredients listed on the containers. Unfortunately, as this recent study illustrates, some companies are clearly ignoring these regulations and selling products that could potentially pose serious health risks to people throughout the country. That’s why it’s critical that the FDA inspects products sold over the counter and make sure the ingredients are accurate. And there needs to be serious legal consequences for companies that break these laws. That’s why we take such cases so seriously. In the recent study, researchers “tested 27 products promising big muscles, sexual prowess, weight loss and more. Of those, 18 contained ingredients not approved for over-the-counter use; 17 still had the same drug that prompted the recalls,” according to the Associated Press article.
The FDA does not have to approve dietary supplements before they are marketed, according to the Associated Press article. However, the labels must list all ingredients and manufacturers are not allowed to sell products that are "adulterated or misbranded," according to the FDA’s website, as quoted in the Associated Press article.
In response to the study, the Associated Press reported that the FDA issued hundreds of consumer alerts warning about tainted products, sent warning letters to supplement makers and "pursued civil and criminal enforcement" against companies illegally marketing such products.
