Jess Martinez’ New Book Illustrates Difficult Lives of Migrant Farm Workers

CORCORAN, Calif. (PRWEB) January 09, 2015 -- According to author Jess Martinez, in the 1950’s and even today, migrant farm workers live on the fringes of society, not being accepted by the local townspeople and often shunned by them. He said that many of these farm workers fear the Immigration Service and still live in the shadow of society. With this reality, he wanted readers to see how difficult life was during those times in the farm labor camps of Corcoran, Calif. Thus, he published “Harvest of Tears” (published by Xlibris).

This book is about the difficult lives of migrant farm workers in California’s San Joaquin Valley during the mid 1950’s in which these people struggled to make ends meet to feed their families despite being treated as lower class citizens in the communities they worked for. These hard working people also feared being deported and separated from their families, but they also saw to it that their children’s needs were met.

“My book will appeal to readers because it tells of the lives of people that they could hardly imagine for themselves or their children,” Martinez said. “Through this story, readers will see a different side of the coin for once and put them in the shoes of these migrant workers.”

With “Harvest of Tears”, the author hopes that readers will see and realize that farm workers are not a threat to society but are generally honest, hard-working, law abiding citizens who just want a better life for themselves and their children.

About the Author
Jess San Miguel Martinez was born to Guadalupe and Jesus (J.P.) Martinez in the town of Villa Acuna, Coahuila, Mexico in the mid 1940’s. Jess was the fifth born of 11 children, seven boys and four girls. When Jess was young, his family migrated first to the Santa Clara Valley in California, then to Corcoran, Kings County, in central California. He graduated from Corcoran High School in 1963, and, marrying young, got his first “real” job, working with Gilkey Farms Inc., as a tractor or caterpillar operator, or working in the Gilkey cotton gin. He retired from the Fresno County Sheriff’s Department in 2007, however, remained extremely busy with his community work as an officer or board member of the N.L.P.O.A. Kings County Chapter, Corcoran District Hospital, and KCAO.
