Jewelry Industry Veteran Patti J. Geolat Names Terry Chandler of Diamond Council of America to the Board of the Something for Kelly Foundation
Dallas, Texas (PRWEB) April 22, 2014 -- Today, Patti J. Geolat of Geolat Companies announced the appointment of Terry Chandler to the board of the Something for Kelly Foundation.
Motivated by her niece’s - Kelly Burk Nobbe - untimely death in 2009, Patti Geolat has created a national foundation to prevent eating disorders (ED) in children ages 6-12. Something for Kelly was launched this year during the National Eating Disorders Week, February 23 - March 1st. Its mission is to empower children ages 6-12 to fight their predisposition to eating disorders. Through its programs and services, the foundation aspires to create a mindset shift in children with a predisposition to ED, assist them in recalibrating their relationship with food, and motivate them to voluntarily choose a healthier direction.
Responding to his recent appointment to the board, Terry Chandler said: “I am honored to be asked to serve on the Something for Kelly board. The opportunity to work with Patti and her team on this important mission to help these children is humbling.”
Eating disorders in children, as signaled recently by CNN, are on the rise, with girls and boys as young as 8 years old being hospitalized with anorexia- the deadliest of all eating disorders. CNN points to a recent study conducted by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality showing that hospitalizations for eating disorders in children under 12 increased by 119% between 1999 and 2006. According to the same study, the numbers are not getting any better.
Reacting to these alarming numbers, Patti Geolat’s decision to give back was easy.
“These statistics should be disturbing to any family in the United States, and for that matter throughout the world. In 2009, my family was devastated by the loss of my niece, due to anorexia. Aside from the obvious grief that we felt, we were stunned by the overwhelming fact of how ill-prepared we were to face this tragedy. Although we knew that she was battling with this monster, we could not fathom that she could go to bed one night, after what seemed like a normal day, and not wake up.”
The Something for Kelly Foundation has been established to prevent this tragic and needless loss from happening to other families. It will showcase programs and services that care for the most vulnerable in our society: our children.
Speaking about the vision of the foundation, Geolat added that “through our programs, we will catch this disease before it takes root. That is why our focus is children in their formative years of 6-12. Our programs will help them to achieve and maintain a healthy body image and relationship with food.”
